Okay, a week ago (less even) my gtx 285 graphics card took a dive and blew up. I could smell the plastic burning so something ended up being crispy.

At first, I thought it was the power supply so I replaced it with the new corsair 750 watt power supply.

After a quick test, it turns out my gtx 285 wouldn't work (the problem) so once it got removed, the computer would run again. However, there could be a chance that my original power supply is still fine.

When I reverted back to my old graphics card (geforce 8800gt) the computer runs again just fine with one exeption, whenever I play a game (such as wow) about 30 sec to 1 min later the computer shuts down completely.

I figured it was because my old card is an overheating pos (main reason why i got gtx 285) so I waited a few days to decide if i should buy a new card or wait longer.

Today, I just got the Gtx 550 ti. It runs just fine and dandy... however, back to the same problem... the computer would completely shut down after 30 sec to 1 min into the game. If I don't play a game, the computer stays on as long as I want to.

I'm stumped. New power supply and now new video card. What else could be broken? I have updated the video card drivers and problem still persists.

download a CPU temp monitor and see what your CPU is running at, if it's running hot (70 degrees+) put some more thermal paste on it and see if that does the trick.

Cool, running a memtest crashes/shuts down the comp.

I did take the whole comp apart to clean the dust that has been building up. Guess I need new thermal paste.

Is there even thermal paste on there? I'm surprised it isn't dead.

Well..... The paste sort of.....melted? Anyways, I cleaned up the cpu/heatsinkand got rid of the old paste.

That's the beauty of intel cpu, they don't really blow up without a heatsink, instead, they slow down and lag a lot to a halt/shut down. The Amd cpu chips however.....

The stores are closed tonight so I'll get paste in the morning.

Edit: I cracked the paste until after the vid card blew up and it didn't really cause a lot of problems until I noticed wow wouldn't run with 8800 (since friday).
